PIWI

PIWI is the German abbreviation for ‘Pilswiederstandsfähig’, which means ‘fungal resistant’. PIWIs are fungus-resistant grape varieties that acquired their resistance by crosses with American or Asian fungus-resistant grape varieties (see also ‘hybrid grapes’). Well-known examples of PIWIs are Cabernet blanc, Johanniter, Solaris, Villaris, Souvignier Gris, Regent, Pinot and Cabernet cortis.
