Grape species

Grape species are part of the genus Vitis, which in turn is part of the family of flowering plants, the Vitaceae. Vitis vinifera, Vitis labrusca, Vitis rupestris and Vitis berlandieri are all examples of grape species, that each contain many grape varieties. The European wine grape varieties such as the Pinot noir, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc and Riesling are all Vitis vinifera grapes. American grape varieties such as Concord, Delaware and Isabella are part of the Vitis labrusca grape species.
