Extra-Sec is a classification for sparkling wine to indicate that the amount of residual sugar is between 12-17 g/L. The total scale used contains the classifications – from very dry to very sweet – Brut Nature, Extra Brut, Brut, Extra-Sec (or Extra-Dry), Sec (or Dry), Demi-Sec and Doux. ‘Extra-Sec’ therefore indicates that the sparkling wine is relatively sweet. Extra-Sec, or Extra-Dry as it is also called, is therefore a misleading term since the sparkling wine is by no means ‘very dry’. See also ‘dosage’.
