A blend is a wine made from multiple separate wines that are made from different grape varieties. The separate wines can differ in aromas, sugar level, acidity, oak influence etc.. By blending them they each attribute their own aromas, mouthfeel and nuances to the blend. For example the famous GSM blend from the French Rhône region is made from wines vinified from Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre grapes. Roughly, Grenache adds fruit and alcohol, Syrah adds tannins and black fruit and peppery aromas and Mourvèdre contributes to the blend with earthy aromas and also tannins.
